Week of 10/10/2016

Good afternoon,

Last week was a very exciting week in our fourth grade class. One of the big highlights for our class this week was going to the science lab, where we were able to experiment with different rocks in vinegar. We are currently waiting for our vinegar to evaporate so we can check for any crystal formations. Another big highlight was the Walkathon, everyone had a great time walking and dancing together and just growing as a learning community. We started learning about measurements and converting measurements in math. We also read about animal dentistry in reading. In religion we studied the ways we teach our conscience and what are trustworthy sources. Finally, in social studies we took an indepth look at the circumstance in Europe leading to the colonization of Maryland.

In the coming week we have a lot planned. In math we will introduce Ten Marks assignments and begin learning about metric units of measurement. In science we will venture back to the lab to examine the results of our vinegar test. In reading we will conclude our reading of Sarah Plain and Tall, which we wil use to discuss theme and main idea. In Grammar we will wrap up our second unit on nouns and test on Friday. We will also test on Colonial Maryland in social studies this Thrsday. I would like to thank you all for taking the time to check our class page and for being so supportive, as always if you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

Thanks,

Mr. Pace

Wrapping Up a Great First Week!

Hello Families,

It was a great first week in Mr. Pace's 4th grade class. I cannot express how much fun it has been to begin getting to know all of these wonderful scholars. This week we began working on several skills across multiple content areas. In math we have been working on place value and extending our place value understanding into the millions period. In reading we have read the story "The Lost Lake" and we have also learned some pre-reading strategies. In grammar, all the children did an excellent job of distinguishing different sentence types, including, interrogative, declarative, exclamatory, and imperative sentences. In social studies we learned about the geography of our state of Maryland.  In religion we discussed ways we come to know God. Finally the highlight of the week was in science where we introduced our "mock" rocks and the children got to pretend to be geologists making detailed observations about the rocks.

Coming up this week we will wrap up our place value unit and move on to rounding and estimating. We will read "Getting to Know Allen Say"  and work on comprehension strategies. In grammar we will learn about subjects and predicates and practice writing sentences with complete subjects and predicates. In social studies we will learn about the climate of Maryland and take a look at the history of the Chesapeake Bay. In science we will compare our "mock" rock observations and begin to deconstruct them and identify their composition.

I look forward to seeing you all at back to school night and giving you a first hand look at what your scholar has been learning!

Thanks,

Mr. Pace

Welcome to 4th Grade! 08/29/2016

Hello Families,

My name is Mr. Pace and I am so excited to start this year off with you all. First, I would like to thank you for taking the time to check our page as you will find a lot of vital information pretaining to our class. This week we will really be focusing on laying a strong foundation of routines and expectations for the year. By investing this time in getting the routines and expectations perfect at the begining of the year we will create an environment that is ideal for our children to learn and grow. These routines include how to move around the classroom, how to ask for materials, how to get my attention, where to find important information and so much more.

Once we have covered all of the routines and expectations we will shift our focus to digging into the content of 4th grade. In math we will begin working on improving our place value sense. In reading we will be reading the short story "The Lost Lake". In religion we will work on understanding the Lord as a Trinity. In science we will be making and experimenting on "mock" rocks as we kick off our earth materials unit. In social studies we will begin learning about the climate and the land of Maryland. Finally, in grammar we will discuss and explore sentences and their structures.

This week we would also like for all of our parents to join us in wishing Nasir and Asaad a very happy birthday!

Thanks,

Mr. Pace
